"That's hard to actually express in words. Do I *really* "love" him, or is it some sort of infatuation (that's lasted for 20 years)? How could I love someone I've never even met, much less really know anything about on a personal level?
I first fell in love with Nick when I saw him in the Save A Prayer video. I was instantly mesmerized by the music, the lyrics, the beauty of the exotic scenery. And, oh yeah, that amazing, dazzling *SMILE*! I made it a point to find out everything I could about the band who'd accomplished such incredible music, and in the process, I became quite smitten with Nick. I was in a pretty bad marriage. Nick became my escape. I wrote letters to him nearly every night after my husband had gone to bed while I stayed up watching MTV in the hopes that another Duran Duran video would come on and bring a little ray of sunshine into my world. In essence, those letters to Nick became the closest thing I've really ever had to a journal or diary. Nick was not an unreachable, unattainable super celebrity to me, he was my confidante, my best friend, my solace. Well, him and my stuffed Ewok from Return of the Jedi, which I had taken to sleeping with every night (I've still got the Ewok, too, by the way - I tend to hang on to what I love, I guess)...
Somewhere, somehow, I found the strength to step out of the dream I'd created around Nick and start to live my life in a meaningful way. I got out of the abusive marriage and started to grow up. I still loved Duran Duran and Nick, but they became less of a focal point in my life. I missed seeing them in concert when they hit my hometown at the very height of Duran-mania (my husband was too cheap to buy tickets for us!), but I saw them in 88 or 89 (forget the date, which has been torn off the ticket stub) and again in November of 93. Shortly after that, I met my current husband and started the life I'd dared to dream of about 10 years before. Duran passed out of my daily existence and I found myself oddly surprised to discover that a truly beautiful and touching song that was played in memory of a friend (Ordinary World) was yet another Duran masterpiece.
I didn't think of them much between 94 and 04, or if I did, it was only with a vague sense of curiosity about where they were now. Then, in the middle of January, my husband (who knew of my special love for Save A Prayer) put a copy of the video on my computer desktop as a special surprise. Curiosity got the better of me and I started searching on the Internet for some recent news and/or pics about Nick. Imagine my utter shock and amazement to find that the original 5 had reunited, written new songs, and had recently toured the States (where in the world had I been that I didn't know this?!). Not only that, but they had booked a concert in San Antonio (about an hour and a half away from me here in Austin), and that would happen in just over 2 weeks! Nothing short of a life-threatening emergency involving one of my children could have kept me away from that show! I found a ticket on EBay, dug through my mom's closet to find my old black satin Duran jacket, loaded my camera with film, gassed up the car and I was on my way to a chance-of-a-lifetime experience. It was everything I'd always hoped it would be. I got to watch the show from about 5 rows from the stage, positioned right in front of Nick. What elegance, what poise, what incredible unearthly beauty that man posesses, especially when he smiles...
I had read fan encounter stories, and something made me decide to crochet him a bright pink, fuzzy scarf - not having any real idea how or even if I'd manage to be able to give it to him. My chance came at the end of the show - during the wait between the last song and the encore, I noticed a small space *right at the front of the stage* where nobody else was standing. It was on the side of the stage where they walked on and off the stage. I stood there during the encore, and as he was walking offstage, shaking the hands of his fans, I waved the scarf at him saying something inane like "I made this for you, Nick..." He took it, smiled as it unfurled, then put it around his neck. *That's* why I love Nick - that moment right there. That moment I'd waited 20 years for. No matter how ridiculous or silly that gift might have been, at that moment, he made a fan feel good by smiling and putting it on. "When I was growing up and first saw Duran Duran, I was drawn to Nick - maybe because he just seemed different (and as a teenager, I could really relate to that). And then he smiled.

I did give my obsession up when he married Julianne, though. I ripped his posters from my wall and put ones up of John instead. I was so furious! And my hubby didn't mind that the whole night, I was chanting "NICK! NICK! NICK!"
The green eyes are nice, too - a lot of why I liked Nick is because I have red hair and green eyes, too (well he did have red hair for awhile and it's STILL my favorite color of his) and I think as a teen growing up in a town full of dark-haried tan people and being called all sorts of names for looking different, I just felt like Nick was my soulmate at the time.

"Well I am Duran Duran fan since 1982.Yes cos I live too far from them in Thailand and back there we don't have MTV.So I only listen to them from radio station(nite spot)maybe around late 1981.And I really like their music,I like the cool sounds of keyboard&synthesizer.And later when I first saw their pics in magazine in 1982(thai edition)I was like OMG he's so gorgious.I feel like he's my big brother.*My friend have John Taylor as her brother and I have Nick as my brother.*We went on hunt of the magazine from US at the old book shop.Back there if they can't sale any magazine they will rip only the headline of the title send back and the rest of the mag still great.We've got some 16 magazines,Tiger Beat etc and we are not enough.We went to japanese book shop and saw so many interesting book and mags and we want to buy them all but we don't have enough money cos we're student.So I bought some books and mags in japanese but I can't read any japanese.But those pics&paper quality are great.We have a chance too see their videos together and those make me so much more obcess of the band.I kept collecting their pics,read their article and follow their works like a normal teen and I wish one day I'll have a chance to see them live.I found that Nick like films,art,photographs etc and I think that's very cool.And when he produce Kajagoogoo.I think he has so many talent and I'm so prond of him.
It's hard to find about their news here.But everytime I heard that they will release their album.I'll very excited and have to wait for my record shop to imported those.And in 1994 I heard a very good news.Duran Duran in Bangkok 6 April,1994.I'm so very excited.I've got my ticket on the 2nd row but when they started look like everyone running from their seat including me.I run to the left side to see Nick as close as I can.Yes I lean to the stage at John feet(he was wearing Kilt too)but all I can see is Nick.I can't remember how many times I keep on saying(shouting) "Nick I luv you".He saw and doing the earthing and smile.A very very sweet smile*Still remembered the back of his music sheet.I his hand writing say"I'm f***ing brillent"LOL.It's true.But back there I don't know anything about "follow the band" *well in a good way just for their pics and autographs.*Don't have any info about their flight or anything so I don't have any pics of them.*kicked myself*
And times pass by.I still have some of their poster on my wall and bought every albums of them.Even they changed their members a few times.I silenly thanks god everytime that my Nick still in the band.I'm so proud of him,my brother.He still around keep doing his works.
And in late 2000 or early 2001 I found LK message board on internet.I decided to join in October 19, 2001 and I'm so addicted to this message board.And I'm so excited about the reunion.And in 2002 Nick has side project with Stephen Duffy "the Devils" I'm so excited and can't wait to have this album.
I have a chance to see them live again in 2003.This time is very special,my dream come true.They're back together "the original 5"
This time I have to fly to Singapore to see them.I think maybe I can meet them at the airport so I waiting for them there.Some journalists asked me for some interview after knowing that I fly from Bangkok just to see Duran Duran.I waiting for them at the airport til almost 1am.Finally they arrive.I have a chance to take so many pictures and have his autograph.(I brought the Devils sleeve)I went to their gig and I'm back to 13 again.LOL.After the gig I have a chance to go to the after show party at Brithish High Comm resident.So I have a chance to take their pics again and with my Nick.*His hair is so soft and I have a chance to hold his sholder.*evil grins*
